Dairy Plant Hygiene Consumables: What to Stock and Where
1 October 2026 · 3 min read · Disponord
Dairy plants mix dry filling halls, wet cheese-making areas and cold stores. A practical guide to which disposable hygiene consumables to stock for each, and why one material does not fit all.

Key takeaways
- Dairy plants contain both dry and wet areas, so a single PPE material rarely fits the whole site.
- In filling and packing halls the hazard is fibres and dust, which makes breathable non-woven the better choice.
- Cheese-making, washdown and tank-cleaning tasks are wet, and call for waterproof PE aprons and sleeve covers.
Dairy processing sits between wet food production and clean packaging. A single site can include a cold, wet cheese-making room, a dry filling and packing hall, tank-cleaning areas and a busy flow of visitors and contractors. The hygiene consumables that work in one of these areas can be the wrong choice in the next, and buying a single catch-all item usually means over-spending in some places and under-protecting in others. This guide sets out a practical stocking plan for a dairy plant — what to keep where, why, and how to keep it consistent across shifts.
Start by mapping wet and dry zones
The simplest planning step is to draw the plant as a map of wet and dry zones. Wet zones include cheese vats, whey handling, tank washing and general washdown. Dry zones include filling lines, packing, labelling and palletising. The hazard in a wet zone is liquid and splash; the hazard in a dry zone is fibres, dust and skin shed from working operators. Once the map exists, the material decision largely makes itself: waterproof polyethylene for wet, breathable non-woven for dry.
Filling and packing halls
On a filling or packing line, operators work for long periods near open or freshly filled product. The priorities are keeping hair covered and controlling fibres from clothing. Disposable hair nets are a baseline requirement, and non-woven sleeve covers cover the forearm between glove and sleeve without trapping heat. Comfort matters here: PPE that is uncomfortable is PPE that gets removed.
Cheese-making, washdown and tank cleaning
In wet areas the garment has to resist liquid. A disposable PE apron protects the operator and their work clothing, and PE sleeve covers are normally issued alongside it so that splash does not run down into the glove. Because they are single-use, these items can be changed whenever they are soiled, which is simpler to enforce than laundering and checking reusable garments.
Visitors, contractors and short-duration access
Visitors and contractors are a recurring hygiene risk because they are not trained on the site's routines. A fixed visitor kit solves this: a hair net, a beard cover where needed, a visitor gown and non-woven shoe covers. For a full discussion of what to issue see our guide to visitor gowns, lab coats and coveralls.
- Filling and packing — hair net, beard cover, non-woven sleeve covers
- Cheese-making and washdown — PE apron, PE sleeve covers, hair net
- Tank cleaning — PE apron or long apron, PE sleeve covers
- Visitors and contractors — hair net, beard cover, visitor gown, shoe covers
Keeping the system consistent
A stocking plan only works if the right item is physically at the right door. Put zone kits at the zone entrance, use a clear colour rule so that a breach is visible, and keep a buffer stock so a line never runs out. Disponord manufactures and exports single-use hygiene consumables suitable for HACCP-controlled environments and supplies food and dairy processors in bulk. Send us your zone map and we can propose a kit and quote.
Frequently asked questions
- What PPE is needed in a dairy processing plant?
- Hair nets and beard covers for all operators, non-woven sleeve covers for filling and packing, waterproof PE aprons and sleeve covers for wet areas such as cheese-making and washdown, and a standard visitor kit of gown, hair net and shoe covers.
- Should dairy plants use PE or non-woven PPE?
- Both, assigned by zone. Polyethylene is waterproof and suits wet tasks; non-woven is breathable and suits long wear in dry filling and packing areas. Most dairy plants run both materials.
