Beard Net vs Beard Cover vs Beard Snood: What's the Difference?
7 October 2026 · 3 min read · Disponord
Beard net, beard cover or beard snood? Learn how they differ, when facial hair must be covered in food plants, and when disposable beats reusable.

Search for facial-hair covers and you will find the same product sold under at least four names. Beard net, beard cover, beard snood and beard guard are used almost interchangeably, which makes specifying and comparing them harder than it should be. This guide sorts out the terminology, explains when facial hair must be covered in a food plant, and helps you choose between disposable and reusable.
The terms, decoded
- Beard net / beard cover: a lightweight, usually disposable covering that fits over the beard and moustache and is held by elastic loops around the ears. "Net" is the older term; modern products are often made of non-woven fabric rather than mesh, and "cover" is the more accurate name.
- Beard snood: the term more common in the UK and in catering. It is often a reusable, stretchy fabric snood that wraps around the jaw. Disposable snoods also exist.
- Beard guard / beard restraint: generic terms used in GMP documents. They describe the function, not a specific product.
In practice, when an auditor or a site procedure says "beard restraint", any of these products satisfies it as long as the coverage is complete and consistently worn.
When does facial hair need covering?
Food safety standards expect hair, including facial hair, to be contained so it cannot fall into product. Exact rules differ by site and customer, so the written GMP policy of your plant is what applies. Common patterns:
- Many plants require a beard cover for any beard, moustache or sideburns beyond a defined length.
- Some require all facial hair to be covered regardless of length in open-product areas.
- Visitors and contractors entering production areas are normally held to the same rule as staff.
Whatever your policy says, the net should be put on before entering the production area, worn over the full length of the beard, and replaced after breaks or if damaged.
Disposable vs reusable
| Factor | Disposable beard cover | Reusable snood |
|---|---|---|
| Hygiene control | Fresh one each time, no laundering needed | Depends on laundering and inspection |
| Fibre or lint shedding | Low in quality non-woven | Can increase with washing and wear |
| Cost per use | Low, predictable | Low if well managed, but laundering has hidden cost |
| Audit evidence | Simple: issue at entry, dispose at exit | Needs wash records and replacement tracking |
| Best for | Production, visitors, contractors | Back-of-house catering with controlled laundering |
For production areas where an audit trail matters, disposable covers are generally easier to defend, because there is no cleaning process that can fail.
What to look for when buying
- Fabric: soft, breathable non-woven that does not itch or shed fibre.
- Elastic loops: secure but comfortable, so staff do not slip them off during a shift.
- Coverage: long enough to cover a full beard and the sideburn area without leaving gaps.
- Colour: white is common; blue gives better visual contrast with most food products if a piece is lost.
- Packaging: boxed in quantities that fit your dispensers, with a consistent product from batch to batch.
Pair it correctly with the hair net
A beard cover only works as part of a complete head-and-face system. The hair net or bouffant cap must cover all head hair and the ears where required, and the beard cover must sit under or alongside it without leaving a gap at the cheek. A cover that is worn on the chin only, or pulled down under the nose, defeats the purpose, so supervisors should treat it like any other PPE rule. For hair-net options see Hair Nets vs Bouffant Caps.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a beard net the same as a beard cover?
- Yes, in everyday use. "Net" is the older name and "cover" the more common modern term for the same disposable product.
- What is a beard snood?
- A beard snood is a fabric covering that wraps around the beard, often reusable. It is the same functional category as a beard cover, mostly used in the UK and in catering.
- Do I have to cover a short beard or stubble?
- It depends on your site's GMP policy. Many plants specify a length threshold; stricter sites require all facial hair to be covered in open-product areas.
- Are disposable beard covers better than reusable ones?
- For production areas and audit evidence, usually yes, because there is no laundering step to control. Reusable options can work where laundering is well managed.
